A visitor visa allows a foreign immigrant to stay in Canada temporarily. It is often referred to as the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) according to the IRCC. With your visitor visa, you can “visit” anyone or any place in Canada. You must apply for a visitor visa to get into Canada even as a tourist or for a company conference. Foreign immigrants from visa-exempt nations are exempted from the visitor visa application process.
Every foreign national visiting Canada for any reason whatsoever needs to apply for a visitor visa. Canadian permanent residents and citizens are exempted from this visa application process. As a visa-exempt foreign national to Canada, you do not need a visitor visa to come here for a visit. Canadian residents with expired PR cards are not allowed to apply for visitor visas. They should apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) instead.
Dual citizens with Canadian citizenship are also exempted from applying for visitor visas when coming to Canada.
Without a visitor visa, however, the Canadian citizen must have a valid passport to cross the border. This applies to all Canadian citizens or permanent residents traveling for tourism. Foreign nationals coming to Canada for business purposes must secure their business visitor visa before their dates of visitation.
The visitor visa application process is a simple one. However, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Your current passport with your name, date of birth, photo, citizenship status, and document number
Yes. You can’t stay in Canada after six months as a visitor. Visitors can only extend their visas while the current one is still on.
You do not need a TRV to study in Canada as long as you have a study visa.
No, a visitor visa does not grant you the right to work or study in Canada. If you wish to work or study, you must apply for a separate work or study permit before entering the country.
