What is a Super Visa to Canada?

Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or residents (permanent) can come to Canada under the super visa program. This is a designated immigration category for parents and grandparents of Canadian permanent residents. Successful holders of the super visa can migrate to Canada to live or work here for up to five years. With the super visa, holders need not renew their immigration status during the five-year duration.

SUPER VISA APPLICATION

How to Apply for a Super Visa for Parents in Canada?

Eligible Canadian permanent residents and citizens can submit their super visa applications online. Another common alternative is to send in your application through the paper-based application process. Whichever method you choose, you have to still prove you’re the parent or grandparent of a Canadian permanent resident. Applicants must attach verifiable letters of invitation from their children or grandchildren to their applications.

Your letter of invitation must include detailed information on how they intend to care for and provide for you during your stay in Canada. It must also contain enough information on the number of persons residing in your sponsor’s Canadian home. The sponsored grandparent or parent must provide proof of valid Canadian insurance coverage. Anyone sponsoring their parents must have funds that meet the Low Income Cut-off (LICO) minimum requirements.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The Canadian citizen or permanent resident inviting their parent or grandparent must demonstrate they meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) threshold to support their visitor(s). The MNI varies based on family size, and the most recent information can be found on the Government of Canada’s website. The host must also provide a written commitment of financial support during the visitor’s stay.

The processing time for a Super Visa application varies depending on factors such as the applicant’s country of origin and the complexity of the application. On average, it takes about 3 to 6 months for the visa application to be processed. However, processing times may be subject to change, so it is advisable to check the Government of Canada’s website for the latest information.

Super Visa holders are not allowed to work or study in Canada. The visa is specifically designed for family reunification purposes, allowing parents and grandparents to visit and spend quality time with their families in Canada. If the visitors are interested in working or studying, they will need to apply for a different visa category, such as a work permit or a study permit.
