FSWP works hand-in-hand with the Canadian Express Entry system. It is the best immigration channel for foreign skilled workers looking to work in Canada. Invited applicants also get to apply for their permanent residency status through FSW. To be eligible for this express entry stream, you must have the required work experience in your respective field. Only skills and qualifications from approved employers are accepted under the Federal Skilled Worker program.
To get into the Federal Skilled Worker Program for permanent residency in Canada, candidates must meet certain minimum eligibility requirements. You must be within the age range, meet the language proficiency requirement (English or French), and have the necessary educational qualifications.
Let’s elaborate on these three major requirements for FSWP:
You must provide proof of working with/for a Canadian employer for at least 12 months. This continuous employment must be within your acclaimed skill or occupational group (NOC Level O, A, or B). Part-time equivalents of the 12-month (full-time) employment are also allowed.
You must have CLB Level 7 in either French or English language tests.
You must have at least a Canadian high school diploma as a Canadian resident. Foreign nationals must have the equivalent of a Canadian diploma from an approved foreign school.
You must have enough funds to support yourself and/or other family relatives settling with you in Canada.
Must have plans to stay outside of the province of Quebec
Candidates that meet the above mentioned criteria must also have at least 67/100 CRS points to qualify for FSWP. With these requirements, you’d be eligible for the express entry pool and permanent residency application. One more thing; candidates under the FSWP must not be inadmissible to Canada. This automatically rules you out of the Federal Skilled Worker Program. Applicants that are either medically or criminally inadmissible must not apply.
To get started, you must send in your Experience Entry Profile through IRCC. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) coordinates applicants’ profiles sent to the Express Entry pool. Please note that your express entry profile submission doesn’t qualify you for an invitation to apply for PR. Only candidates with competitive CRS scores amongst other criteria get invites from the Canadian government.
Accepted profiles get Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for their permanent residency statuses. You must have the following documents ready before sending in your FSW application:
Candidates applying for the FSWP must have the necessary educational credentials to get in. Have ready a valid ECA report that clearly states the value of foreign education in your country. This attestation letter must be written in ECA-approved standards. Applicants with verifiable educational credentials from a Canadian-approved Institution (DLI) are exempted. Ensure you get your ECA reports from an authorized representative from your province.
You should have a language proficiency test result when submitting your express entry profile. Ensure your results come from an approved language test board (within the last two years). Only English results from the CELPIP exam (in Canada) and IELTS are valid here. Candidates applying with French results must have Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF) or the Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada).
Have ready your identification documents when submitting your express entry profile. Applicants coming with their family members must cross-check that they have means of identification with them.
When you get an ITA, you have less than two months to submit an eAPR. The Electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR) validates your interest in permanent residency.
Your FSWP Application would remain under processing for 12 months. Applicants that receive ITAs within this period have a limited timeframe of 60 days to respond effectively. All Express Entry applications get processed within six months by the Canadian authority. The following factors may increase or reduce the processing time of your FSWP application:
CRS factors include age, education, work experience, language proficiency, job offers, and adaptability. These determine your ranking in the Express Entry pool.
Yes, you can update your Express Entry profile information, like work experience or language test results, as long as you haven’t received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
Yes, you can include your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children in your application for permanent residence under the FSWP.
