The Federal Skilled Trades Program provides foreign skilled traders with a swift opportunity to migrate to Canada. With the FSTP application, you can apply for permanent residency when you get to Canada. FSTP works hand-in-hand with the express entry system which enables stress-free immigration for skilled traders. Applicants must have the required CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) scores to compete in the Express Entry pool.
To be considered an eligible applicant for the Federal Skilled Trades Program, you must meet the following criteria:
You must have a minimum of two years of working experience as a skilled trader to apply for FSTP. Part-time applicants with equivalent experience as full-time skilled workers can also apply. Please note that your work experience must not exceed the 5-year timeframe as stated by IRCC. You must also have the appropriate certification to practice your trade in Canada. Candidates must fall under either of the following occupational groups:
MAJOR GROUP 72 | Electrical, Industrial, and Construction Tradespersons |
MAJOR GROUP 73 | Equipment and Maintenance Operation Tradespersons |
MAJOR GROUP 82 | Supervisors and Technical jobs in Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Related Production |
MAJOR GROUP 92 | Processing, Manufacturing, and utilities supervisors and Central control operators |
MINOR GROUP 632 | Cooks and Chefs |
MINOR GROUP 633 | Bakers and Butchers |
Applicants that meet the above-mentioned work experience must also have the following requirements for the FST program:
Currently have a valid job or contract offer for part-time or full-time employment in Canada. Without an employment offer valid for the next 12 months, you must be a certified trader in your field. Your certification for trade must be from an authorized Canadian province or territory.
You must have at least CLB Level IV from an approved French or English language proficiency exam.
Must intend to live outside of the province of Quebec.
Yes, you can include your spouse or common-law partner, as well as dependent children, in your application for permanent residence under the FSTP.
The Express Entry system manages FSTP applications. You need to create an Express Entry profile, and if you meet the criteria, you’ll be placed in a pool of candidates. High-ranking candidates are then invited to apply for permanent residence.
Yes, applicants must have a valid full-time job offer from a Canadian employer for at least one year or a certificate of qualification in their skilled trade from a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.
