Foreign nationals already living in Canada can now tag (sponsor) their family members. The family sponsorship program enables permanent residents to sponsor their relatives to study, live, or work in Canada. This immigration option only comes with one clause – you have to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor anyone at all. Once that is settled, you can now create lasting memories with your relatives in Canada.
Sponsoring a family relative to come to live, study, or work in Canada isn’t as straightforward as it may sound. Canadian permanent residents can only invite their close siblings, partners, spouses, or dependent children. Once your guests fit into these categories, you can begin your family sponsorship application process. Let’s define the above-mentioned terms to avoid any misconception when submitting your applications.
As a permanent resident currently living in Canada, you can sponsor your common-law partner, spouse, or conjugal partner. When you invite them to Canada, they immediately become permanent residents here. Even when they decide to travel for work reasons or live abroad, they remain residents of Canada. If they somehow choose to remain in Canada permanently, they can apply for work permits. Working would help relieve you of the financial burdens.
Spousal work permits allow all sponsored foreign nationals to work in Canada. The spousal work permit is only as valid as the family sponsorship itself. Your sponsored guest can get their work permits even when the sponsorship application is still in process. As long as you have credible proof of them being your partner, Canada considers them as your family. Although, you must have lived together for at least 12 months to be credible recipients.
Family reunification of Canadian permanent residents also includes parents and grandparents. You can sponsor your parent and grandparent to Canada to cater and care for them. To qualify for the parent and grandparent sponsorship program, you must have the finances to cater to them. During their stay in Canada, the Canadian government sees them as your responsibility. You must meet the financial eligibility requirements to sponsor them into Canada.
Citizens of Canada and/or permanent residents looking to bring their parents must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) of the program. Your MNI is determined by the size of your family unit before and after your parents’ visit. You must also have the necessary health insurance coverage on standby before sponsoring. Parents and grandparents can apply for a super visa if they wish to stay in the country longer. Otherwise, the visitor visa would enable them to stay in Canada for six months.
When moving to Canada for the first time, you can always include your children’s names when applying for permanent residence. Parents can always sponsor their dependents or children at any time even when they didn’t include them in their accompanying lists. Remember that these kids must either be your biological or adopted children. They must also fall under the age of 22 to be considered as being unfit to cater for themselves in another country.
Your sponsored child or dependent must be unmarried and be without kids of their own. Children above the age limit may be considered if they are incapable of fending for themselves as a result of a mental or physical challenge. You can also sponsor your orphaned brothers, nephews, sisters, or nieces on very rare occasions. These persons must also be unmarried and under the age limit (18 years old).

Yes, you do. Meeting the MNI requirements is a necessity when sponsoring any family relative coming to Canada. It’s not a must to have a job currently but you must be financially capable of catering for them upon arrival.
Your family sponsorship application can take anywhere between 11-12 months from start to finish. What lengthens some applications is the sensitivity of the case. Ideally, it shouldn’t take more than a year to get approval on your application.
If for one reason or the other, you do not meet the requirements for the family sponsorship program, you may have other options. Contact Oye Immigration today to take our free online assessment. This would enlighten you on other immigration programs available for them
Canadian permanent residents and citizens can sponsor as many family relatives are they wish. However, your application for every family relative has to come in one at a time. They’d all go through similar vetting and review processes like the others.
